Upper GI Endoscopy

EGD stands for esophagogastroduodenoscopy. It is an examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract otherwise known as the esophagus, stomach, and the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). An EGD is most commonly performed to diagnose:

  • trouble swallowing
  • heartburn
  • food getting stuck
